Hey {NAME}, Last week, I sent you an email telling you aaaaall about my journey through burnout last

[image] Hey {NAME}, Last week, I sent you an email telling you aaaaall about my journey through burnout last year, including the toll it took on my physical body and mental health. And you wanna know something crazy? More than 700 people responded to that email to tell me their own burnout stories. WOW! Something tells me this whole “burnout” and “overwhelm” thing is more common than we think. ;) So, this week I’m changing things up and telling you my specific strategies to get rid of burnout, reduce overwhelm, and automate your business (so that you can take a freakin’ break!). This email is packed with information pulled from my real-life experience and shares: - How I was able to take 6 entire months off from my business (without hurting our revenue or customer support). - How to find the root cause of your burnout so you can get rid of it for good. - What to do if you’re feeling exhausted, moody, depressed, or anxious. ...and more. :) At the end, I’m even telling you about a BRAND NEW (and affordable) way that you can work with me to [get your mojo back]( for good. Ready? Let’s do some Q&A! 1. How can I find the root cause of my burnout (and why does this matter)? Since going through my own burnout and talking to hoards of other women who experienced the same, I’ve noticed that burnout doesn’t usually just stem from someone overworking themselves. It actually goes a lot deeper than that. From what I’ve seen and experienced, burnout manifests because there is an area of our life that is not in alignment with our truest self...yet we keep going anyways. For one person, this might mean that they try to make a relationship or marriage work even though, if they were honest with themselves, the relationship expired a long time ago. For someone else, it might mean that they keep running a business that they’re no longer passionate about. For you, it might be a medley of things. But the key is this: something is no longer fulfilling you, yet you keep doing it anyways. My recommendation: Be really honest with yourself here. What is no longer working in your life that you are afraid to change? For example: - Your business - Your relationship - Your friendships - Where you live - Your creativity + freedom (as in, are you honoring your creativity and need for freedom, or are you forcing yourself to live a conventional life?) - Your family Now, once you know which areas you have resistance to changing, it’s up to you to create a vision for what those areas COULD look like if you were living honestly. For example, if you feel like you’ve outgrown your friendships, yet you still hang out with the same group of friends three times a week, then create a plan for the type of friends and community that would REALLY light you up. Then...take action in whatever way it looks like for you. 2. What should I do if I’m feeling fatigue, apathy, depression, or moodiness? Your body often knows when something’s wrong before your mind does. And it communicates that something is off by manifesting physical ailments. So, if you’re feeling common “burnout symptoms” like fatigue, apathy, moodiness, a racing heart, or mental health woes, then it might be a sign to reevaluate the direction you’re headed in. For me, this was the biggest sign that something needed to change in my life. Tending to my physical health was an important step in my recovery. My recommendation: Find a doctor or naturopath who can run blood tests to see what’s going on inside your body. I didn’t do this for a LONG time because I didn’t know what type of doctor to call or what to ask for. I ended up finding my naturopath on Yelp, and when I told him my symptoms, he knew which blood tests I needed to take and a phlebotomist came to my house to take my blood. It actually ended up being very easy! Being able to see which hormones were were too high or low (and then take supplements to correct them, based off my doc’s recommendations) was game-changing for me. I also want to note that hormonal birth control played a big role in many of my symptoms and hormonal imbalances. I’d taken hormonal birth control pills for around 10 years (off and on) and never had an issue, but it became clear that they were causing many of my physical problems. I stopped taking them about a year ago and it helped me tremendously in bouncing back from burnout. I highly recommend researching the ill effects of birth control to see how it may be affecting your body. Dr. Jolene Brighten is a great online resource! 3. How did I set up my business so that I could take a 6-month break without any disruption to my revenue, team, or customers? Can I be honest with you? Even though everything was set up seamlessly before my departure, I still had a LOT of fear that my business would nosedive in my absence. So, if you’re feeling mega resistance to the idea of taking a break (even for a couple days), then know that that’s normal, and doesn’t necessarily mean that your fears will come true. But back to the question here: how did I do it?! There were a couple main factors that allowed me to take a long sabbatical from my company: First, I have a team, and especially an Operations Director who runs my team. In my company, my main job is to come up with the vision for my business, build marketing campaigns, and create content (like for new online courses). Most other tasks are outsourced to people on my team. And if you noticed, the tasks that fall into my wheelhouse tend to be tasks that grow my company. So, when I took my sabbatical, my company didn’t grow, but it also didn’t decline -- it earned roughly the same in revenue during those 6 months. But my team handled all of the day-to-day tasks so that my company could coast along in my absence. And of huge importance was my Operations Director who managed my team and made sure that things were running smoothly without me. Instead of needing to check in with every member of my team to make sure things are on schedule, I only need to check in with her, since she knows everything that’s happening. Before hiring my Operations Director, I worked with a part-time Project Manager, who was also marvelously helpful for me. Hiring this type of role has been one of my best business decisions. Second, I have several evergreen sales funnels set up that can run without me. This is where a significant amount of our revenue comes from each month. These sales funnels help to sell my online courses, but they also make income from affiliate marketing, too. I DON’T make most of my revenue through things like one-on-one coaching, in-person events, speaking, or other streams that demand a lot of my in-person time. It’s not to say that I never do those things (or that I dislike them!), but it’s just that my business doesn’t depend on those things to stay afloat. My recommendation: It’s time to start hiring or growing your team when A) you know your business could be growing more quickly with more hands on deck, and/or B) you’re beginning to feel overwhelmed with all of the tasks you personally need to do. Your first or next hire depends on your business. Take a look at which tasks you spend the most time doing, but that result in the lowest amount of revenue for your business. For most online business owners, this might be things like, responding to emails, designing graphics, or editing videos or podcast episodes. As your business grows, I highly recommend hiring a Project Manager (and eventually, Operations Director) to manage your team and projects. Also, run through all the ways your business makes money...how many of them require your time? Could you take a week off (starting tomorrow!) or would your business crash and burn? If all of your income streams require your time, I recommend thinking of new income streams you can develop that require less of your ongoing time. 4. What if I need a break RIGHT NOW, but don’t have time to walk away. What are small-but-mighty ways to take time off? I completely understand the fact that taking a 6-month break from your business might not be feasible right now. For many years, it would have been laughable for me, too. While you work on building a team and creating passive income, what can you do in the meantime? Here are some ideas… - Take a 1-night trip away. (Note: To reeeeally get the anti-burnout benefits, taking time away should become more of a regular occurrence for you. Even one day a month is better than nothing!) - Go on a technology sabbatical. Can’t step away from your work? Instead, try stepping away from technology (especially social media) for a few days or more. You’d be surprised the impact a week away from technology can have on your mental health! - Ask for help. Many of us have responsibilities that could be outsourced to a partner, friend, or assistant, but we’re afraid of burdening people. Would it help if your partner watched the kids one night a week so you could go on a solo date alone? Would hiring cleaners to come to your house once a month save you the headache of cleaning the whole thing yourself, on top of your hectic schedule? Where can you ask for help to regain your sanity? - Create stronger boundaries. If a friendship or relationship is draining you, chances are that you don’t have strong enough boundaries in place. Do you say “yes” to doing something that you don’t really want to do? Are you always on call for a friend who “just needs to talk,” but is never there for you when you need it? Where in your life can you communicate stronger boundaries to regain more time in your life? - Try meditation. Meditation is proven to help with everything from lowering stress to improving sleep. The compound effect that stress and poor sleep have on a person is enough to send someone spiraling into burnout. Even just 10-20 minutes of meditation per day can make you feel tremendously better over time. Phew! I feel like I could talk about this subject for-e-ver!
