The new kid on the block The first meeting of the [International Advisory Committee for AI]( organized by the Association of American Medical Colleges just took place and it felt that medical educators face huge challenges in preparing the healthcare workforce for this advanced technology. I hope this group will provide practical recommendations so others can start [teaching AI in medical school]( the same way I've been doing that for years. In the meantime, the FDA just cleared for marketing the first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor, Salesforce launched a medical AI tool and AI was also proven to help diagnose ear infections at home! It was an exciting week. I hope you will find the newsletter useful! Best regards, Berci Bertalan Meskó, PhD The Medical Futurist [SALESFORCE UNVEILS AI HEALTHCARE PLATFORM EINSTEIN 1]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Another tech giant, Salesforce, enters the healthcare market. They just announced new AI solutions for healthcare workers that could help automate some of their administrative tasks such as booking appointments, summarizing patient information and sending referrals by prompting AI with conversational language. "Salesforce said doctors can use Einstein Copilot: Health Actions to generate a patient summary that includes details like patients’ medications, clinical service requests, diagnoses and tests. By generating a summary with AI, physicians would no longer need to spend time looking up all those components independently." [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? They will roll this out during the summer and the tool reportedly will comply with HIPAA regulations. [THE WEARABLE HEALTH TRACKERS: 18 DEVICES ON 18 BODY PARTS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- In our latest infographic, we summarized the vast potential of wearable health technologies to contribute to patients’ care and especially medical decision-making by showing what vital signs and health parameters those digital health technologies could measure and on what body parts. While smartwatches and fitness trackers are pretty common nowadays, the infographic (and our detailed analysis) features less common devices too. [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? It could be one of the first truly comprehensive overviews of the wearable digital health market. I hope you will find it useful. [GENERATIVE AI IN HEALTHCARE - THE CHATGPT REVOLUTION]( --------------------------------------------------------------- As more and more healthcare AI tools hit the market, medical professionals don’t need to become data scientists or deep learning experts, but they need a “scientific understanding” of how to use this technology, what it’s good for, and for what purposes we can expect AI assistance. Generative AI will transform healthcare. This book will equip you with the working knowledge to make the most (and best) of this revolution and benefit from it in your medical profession. [GET IT HERE]( [WORLD’S FIRST PATIENT TREATED WITH NEW IMPLANTABLE DEVICE FOR PULMONARY HYPERTENSION]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Aria CV just announced that its new implantable device for treating pulmonary hypertension and limiting symptoms that can lead to heart failure has been successfully implanted into a patient for the very first time as part of an ongoing clinical trial. "The Gen 2 Aria CV Pulmonary Hypertension System is a gas-filled balloon designed to mimic the function of healthy vessels, which helps the heart pump at a more normal rate and improves blood flow to the lungs. It is implanted percutaneously and guided directly to the patient’s main pulmonary artery." [READ MORE]( WHY IT'S IMPORTANT? World's firsts must be shared. [FDA CLEARS FIRST OVER-THE-COUNTER CONTINUOUS GLUCOSE MONITOR]( --------------------------------------------------------------- The FDA just cleared for marketing the first over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor (CGM). The Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is intended for users aged 18 years and older in two major grourps: 1, diabetes patients who does not use insulin, such as individuals treating their condition with oral medications or 2, users without diabetes who want to better understand how diet and exercise may impact blood sugar levels. [READ MORE]( WHY IT'S IMPORTANT? This is a huge addition to the arsenal of technologies patients can use to try to have a healthier life. Last year, I already tested a CGM without having diabetes, [here is what I learned]( from this experiment. [THE 6 MOST EXCITING MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY BREAKTHROUGHS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- The constant buzz about groundbreaking technologies can be overwhelming. While these advancements are undeniably awe-inspiring, simply listing "wow" factors isn't enough. To navigate this landscape, we've identified technologies that meet 3 key criteria: they are recent breakthroughs, (will) have a healthcare impact, and are broad enough to encompass a wide range of applications, yet specific enough to avoid being lost in the category of "AI." [WATCH THE VIDEO]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? By focusing on these targeted areas, we hope to provide a clearer picture of the most impactful advancements shaping the future of medicine [RESURRECTING LOVED ONES AS AI 'GHOSTS' COULD HARM YOUR MENTAL HEALTH]( --------------------------------------------------------------- With the rise and technological progress of generative AI, I guarantee you that there will be companies offering to digitally "resurrect" loved ones and create a chatbot that acts exactly like they used to do. Apparently, this is not a good idea: "Resurrecting deceased loved ones using artificial intelligence could harm mental health, create dependence on the technology and even spur a new religion, researchers have warned." [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? Such hyper-advanced technologies will require so much cultural change that it might take decades to get used to it.
