What a week for the tech giant! Google had a huge week: First, CEO Sundar Pichai demonstrated how their large language model (LLM) called Bard could describe X-rays. Secondly, we learned that later this summer, Med-PaLM 2, a medical large language model with 540 billion parameters and knowledge from scientific papers and websites, will be made available to a select group of customers. And lastly, they recently also outlined how the Lens image search feature built into its apps on iOS and Android can “search for skin conditions” like an “odd mole or rash.” I hope you will find the newsletter useful! Best regards, Berci Bertalan Meskó, PhD The Medical Futurist [GOOGLE'S NEW AI DESCRIBES X-RAYS AND ANSWERS PATIENT QUESTIONS]( "This development highlights the importance of physicians mastering the ability to formulate commands (prompts) to communicate seamlessly with artificial intelligence. Prompts refer to the AI language that allows us to ask AI to perform specific tasks, such as describing a mammogram or generating a creative image in a chosen style." Efficiently communicating with AI with not replace but rather allow us to listen more to patients, although I know this is still not grasped universally. [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? I said it a million times, but say it again: AI will enhance the capacity and skills of healthcare personnel by taking over repetitive tasks, freeing up time and providing never-before-possible instant access to terrabytes of current medical literature. [CHATGPT ALTERNATIVES FOR HEALTHCARE AND RESEARCH]( --------------------------------------------------------------- ChatGPT has made a name for itself in the world of AI, along with Bard and MedPaLM. Following the success of these first-generation language models, a host of alternatives, including the open-source project Spark NLP for Healthcare, have emerged. However, the large language model ecosystem is expanding rapidly, with dozens or perhaps hundreds of ChatGPT alternatives. So, let’s explore some other intriguing options out there. Our study takes an interesting deep dive into healthcare # AI patents from the last decade, analysing over 10,000 of them from 2012 to 2022. By analysing more than 10,000 AI patents, it is possible to predict which specialties will see the largest number of new technologies and will need new regulations. [READ MORE]( WHY IT'S IMPORTANT? Radiology, Oncology and Ophthalmology stood out with a significant number of patents, so these areas will see the largest number of new technologies in clinical practice in a few years. It is also obvious that China is at the forefront of innovation. [GOOGLE SAYS ITS LENS IMAGE SEARCH CAN NOW HELP IDENTIFY SKIN CONDITIONS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- When there is a great AI solution such as skin-checking apps and you can integrate it as a feature into another product too. "Google Lens is now able to offer more information on that pesky rash that you’re not sure whether to worry about. In a blog post published this week, Google outlined how the Lens image search feature built into its apps on iOS and Android can “search for skin conditions” like an “odd mole or rash.” It’ll also work on other parts of your body if you want more information about a bump on your lip, line on a nail, or hair loss from your scalp." [DOCTORS ARE USING CHATBOTS IN AN UNEXPECTED WAY]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Some physicians find that ChatGPT improves their ability to communicate empathetically with patients! "He (...) expected that large language models could take tasks that eat up hours of doctors’ time and contribute to burnout, like writing appeals to health insurers or summarizing patient notes. Most surprising to Dr. Lee, though, was a use he had not anticipated — doctors were asking ChatGPT to help them communicate with patients in a more compassionate way."
