Pausing technological development is never a good idea. Using foresight methods to prepare regulator

Pausing technological development is never a good idea. Using foresight methods to prepare regulators for advanced technologies is. Tech moguls published [an open letter]( about calling for a pause in AI development, especially ChatGPT and other large language models. In the meantime, Italy has become the first Western country to ban ChatGPT entirely due to privacy issues. I think a moratorium on technological development is never a good idea, but using foresight methods to prepare regulators for the release of advanced technologies is. In this case, it's not enough to regulate large language models that deal with text, but regulations should already focus on ChatGPT-like tools that can handle images, sound and videos too. I'll have [a public Q&A session]( about this on Thursday! I hope you will find the newsletter useful! Best regards, Berci Bertalan Meskó, PhD The Medical Futurist [CHATGPT BANNED IN ITALY OVER PRIVACY CONCERNS]( Italy has become the first Western country to block advanced chatbot ChatGPT. The Italian data-protection authority said there were privacy concerns relating to the model, which was created by US start-up OpenAI and is backed by Microsoft. The regulator said it would ban and investigate OpenAI "with immediate effect". "The Italian watchdog said that not only would it block OpenAI's chatbot but it would also investigate whether it complied with General Data Protection Regulation. [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? The fear about large language models is understandable but the actions are not. [DETECTING NOVEL SYSTEMIC BIOMARKERS IN EXTERNAL EYE PHOTOS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Last year Google presented results demonstrating that a deep learning system (DLS) can be trained to analyze external eye photos and predict a person’s diabetic retinal disease status and elevated glycated hemoglobin (or HbA1c, a biomarker that indicates the three-month average level of blood glucose). It was previously unknown that external eye photos contained signals for these conditions. This exciting finding suggested the potential to reduce the need for specialized equipment since such photos can be captured using smartphones and other consumer devices. Encouraged by these findings, they set out to discover what other biomarkers can be found in this imaging modality. [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? Just imagine how useful it would be to detect biomarker levels based on the photos(!) of the eye. The results were promising that it's possible. [INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MEDICINE AND HEALTHCARE]( --------------------------------------------------------------- The impact AI will have on our everyday and professional lives can only be compared to the changes the Internet has brought to the world. We are at the dawn of a new era and our capabilities will be hugely enhanced by algorithms, machine- and deep learning. The course was designed to provide a crystal-clear overview of the role artificial intelligence (AI) can play in medicine and healthcare. Just come as you are, no coding experience or special knowledge is needed! It even helped reduce waiting lists for heart procedures. "Basildon is the UK's first hospital to use the smart glasses for transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) heart procedures which replace diseased heart valves. "The glasses share live video and audio with industry experts - based in Hemel Hempstead and sometimes overseas - who can zoom in on pieces of medical equipment and give advice ahead of and during surgery."" [READ MORE]( WHY IT'S IMPORTANT? I always heard from surgeons how smart glasses like Google Glass could be very helpful to them in the OR since its release. Now that even their enterprise solution got ditched, it's time to realize why the technology was not the problem. [REVIEWING A 24/7 BLOOD PRESSURE BRACELET]( --------------------------------------------------------------- The #digitalhealth revolution has been lagging behind in one major field: blood pressure monitoring. It doesn't get more reliable than the old BP cuffs, and even the first BP monitoring watches proved to be uncomfortable. Aktiia's BP monitoring bracelet aims to fill this digital health gap in a comfortable, user-friendly way. Let's see the device! [READ MORE]( WHY IT'S IMPORTANT? I tend to arrive at the conclusion that the future of blood pressure monitoring lies in the technology called photoplethysmography (PPG). [WHEN IT COMES TO RADIOLOGY, WHAT CAN WE TEACH CHATGPT ?]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Such summaries of potential prompts that would help physicians in a specific medical specialty would be of great interest! This one covered how ChatGPT can help radiologist in their daily jobs. Just a few examples: Identify use cases, improving the radiology report, improve patient information rads receive, flag billing requirements, create CPT code mapping from radiology reports, or omprove comment letters to government agencies. [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? By the way, a new profession has emerged recently: Algorithm Whisperers! Those that can use ChatGPT on an expert level and provide others with the right prompts that yield the best results. [GENERATING POWER WITH BLOOD SUGAR]( --------------------------------------------------------------- An implantable fuel cell that generates electricity from excess glucose in the blood which could be used to operate medical devices in the future! "When combined with artificial, insulin-releasing beta cells, this gives rise to a system that can autonomously regulate blood sugar levels." [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? It's far from a commercially available product yet but the results are certainly very promising. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
