Superpowering operating teams? I've recently delivered two keynotes in person. One in Vienna at the European Congress of Radiology; and one in Warsaw, at the invitation of Roche. I hope I've met some of you at either event. Meanwhile, the team dived into the fascinating world of small language models in our latest article. We'll also have two big announcements this month, two things we've been working on for quite a while. We're optimistic that you will like both! I hope you will find the newsletter useful! Best regards, Berci Bertalan Meskó, PhD The Medical Futurist [SURGEONS USE APPLE'S VR GOGGLES IN AN OPERATION FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE UK]( --------------------------------------------------------------- UK surgeons were the first to use Apple's new mixed reality goggles to help carry out an operation. "A team at the private Cromwell Hospital in London used a £2,700 Vision Pro headset to repair the spine of a male patient. A scrub nurse working alongside the surgeon wore the device to help prepare, keep track of the procedure, and choose the right tools." [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? There is a first for every tech use but it doesn't mean it there will be many more. While mixed reality has great potential, this has a pretty hefty price tag. [USING CHATGPT OFFLINE: HOW SMALL LANGUAGE MODELS CAN AID HEALTHCARE]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Small language models (SLMs) have relatively small numbers of parameters, and can, for example, run on an average mobile phone, without internet access. Potentials of SLM in healthcare include personalised patient journeys, making generative AI accessible to more institutions, and improving transparency over AI models. [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? SLM can be more practical than large language models as they are less resource intensive, without compromising efficiency for specific use cases. [INTRODUCTION TO ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MEDICINE AND HEALTHCARE]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Are you intrigued by how AI is revolutionizing healthcare? Gain the insights you need to understand AI's potential impact on your work with our course. It offers a comprehensive foundation, introducing real-world applications, from medical imaging to personalized medicine. Understand key concepts, current uses, and the potential for future innovations, this course will equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions in this transformative field. [ENROLL HERE]( [SLEEP TRACKING STEP BY STEP: MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR ZZZZS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- I've been tracking my sleep for around 15 years now as I believe that sleep tracking is truly the holy grail of digital health. The good news? Tracking your sleep is easier than ever these days. From smartphone apps to smartwatches and wearables, there's a method for everyone. You pick your method, and I'm gonna break down everything you need to know about getting started with sleep tracking in this video. [WATCH THE VIDEO]( WHY IT'S IMPORTANT? Sleep tracking is the best entry into the world of digital health: no investments needed, and you gain important insights. [ORACLE TO LAUNCH GENERATIVE AI CLINICAL ASSISTANT SOON, EXEC SAYS]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Oracle announced its plans to launch a generative AI-backed clinical assistant in the next quarter to help cut back on the burden of administration for medical professionals. The digital assistant can automatically transcribe patient visits and suggest next steps such as ordering medications or scheduling labs. [READ MORE]( WHY IT'S IMPORTANT? Looks like we have a new member of the "Tech Giants in Healthcare" team. I hope they will look for healthcare collaborators instead of entering the market on their own. [GOOGLE CLOUD RELEASES NEW CLINICAL GENERATIVE AI TOOLS AT HIMSS24]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Google Cloud made two major announcements on HIMSS24. First was Vertex AI Search for Healthcare, a generative AI-powered search function that can help clinicians quickly parse through patient data and clinical notes. They also announced adding two new features to Google's healthcare-specific large language model (LLM) called MedLM. One helps clinicians better classify chest X-rays for screening and diagnostic use cases. The other gives clinicians a chronological list of a patient’s conditions, along with short AI-generated summaries about each of them. [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? It's really exciting to see how tech giants can contribute to the delivery of healthcare. [HEALTH-SPECIFIC EMBEDDING TOOLS FOR DERMATOLOGY AND PATHOLOGY]( --------------------------------------------------------------- Google just made two AI foundation models in dermatology and pathology accessible. They describe how they have developed Path Foundation (models for pathology images) and Derm Foundation (to interpret images of dermatology conditions) and also made these available through API. "After gaining access to each tool, you can use the API to retrieve embeddings from dermatology images or digital pathology images stored in Google Cloud." [READ MORE]( WHY DO I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT? Machine learning tools can help us address the severe global shortage of radiologists, dermatologists and pathologists.
