Hi there,
President Cyril Ramaphosa [made one thing clear last night]( we can't allow the spread of Covid-19 to outrun our capability to effectively address it. As tantalising a prospect that an ease of lockdown regulations is, it's important to remember our "freedom", to indulge a misleading refrain, is irrevocably linked to how we, as a nation, conduct ourselves in the coming weeks and months.
In this week's M&G newspaper we once again look to bring you stories from across the country that open a small window into how people and institutions are grappling with the crisis.
Few could ever be as heart-rending as that which we decided to lead on the front page. [Bhekisisa's]( Joan Van Dyk tells the story of a family's courageous [escape from an abuser](. To many in our population, staying indoors is far more dangerous than anything they may encounter outside.
Athandiwe Saba and Thanduxolo Jika looked into the Eastern Cape's Covid-19 response and were greeted with a litany of [complaints over the province's readiness]( to deal with the growing infection numbers. From Nelson Mandela Bay to Cradock, the common suggestion is that hospitals are not ready to handle an influx of intensive care unit patients. A shortage of personal protective equipment is reportedly an issue too.
"The government needs to provide people with masks just like they are providing free condoms," one doctor bemoaned. "This is going to kill our people because they are not adhering to any lockdown regulations."
