Fed Increases Interest Rates to Counter Inflation

The Federal Reserve increased its short-term interest rate yesterday. The Federal Funds Rate is now in a range of 2.25% - 2.50%. While investors tend to fear higher interest rates, this latest hike isn't the bad news that it seems. Important to note is that the rate hike is designed to counter inflation. America is facing its worst inflation in years. A higher interest rate can curb spending and slow the economy down to a sustainable level. Analysts expect that America's economy will grow by around 1% in 2022. Investors sometimes react negatively to rate hikes. But in this case, the markets were robust. All three major indexes posted gains yesterday. If you're looking to invest during this period, the Financial Services sector is ideal. Banks, in particular, gain when interest rates are high. Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) is one of the best banking stocks for the current conditions. This bank generated 28% in net income growth last quarter. Higher income from loans could boost the bottom line. An upside is expected. The stock closed at $33.59 yesterday. It has an average target of $42.29, suggesting an upside.
