Plus haunted Airbnbs and the Dominican Republic [View this email in your browser]( Hello! We've got islands for different tastes today, even if you don't count our [lead article about Hawaiian culture](. To those who like the warm seas and gentle breezes of the Caribbean, we give [our guide to the stunning Dominican Republic](. Meanwhile, if you want history, beaches and seafood that you can actually road trip to from the mainland US, [how about the barrier islands]( Asia has always been culturally fascinating, as exemplified by [Japan's traditional kimono]( but lately, it's also been the global center of building everything that is taller, longer and more thrilling. Now the [world's longest glass-bottomed bridge]( has opened in China. Or you could just get into the fall spirit and spend a night [at a haunted Airbnb](. Brr... But first... CULTURE [Experience Hawaii’s thriving Indigenous culture beyond sun, sand, and surf]( Travelers want to know Hawai’i more deeply, and many are ready to take the time and effort to do so. Today’s new generation of travelers is “more educated and more interested in culture and history. They’re wanting to know more about the place, and they want to also travel where they can give back.” For those wanting to better understand the culture of Native Hawaiians and how to give back, we’ve got a few suggestions. [DISCOVER HAWAII BEYOND THE OBVIOUS]( THE LATEST --------------------------------------------------------------- WHERE TO STAY [Stay at these 8 haunted Airbnbs for a truly terrifying Halloween night]( --------------------------------------------------------------- TRAVEL [Everything you need to know about visiting the Dominican Republic this fall]( --------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS [The world’s longest glass-bottomed bridge just opened in China]( --------------------------------------------------------------- CULTURE [Japan’s kimono is traditional, beautiful, and incredibly versatile]( --------------------------------------------------------------- ROAD TRIPS [Road trip to one of these barrier islands in the South for history, beaches, and seafood]( --------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS [Akon moves ahead to build futuristic city in Senegal]( MATADOR GUIDE TRIP PLANNING [The ultimate guide to the best hikes in Acadia National Park]( Acadia National Park isn’t known for remote, long-distance hiking and backpacking trails. But what it lacks in remote wilderness, it makes up for in spectacular views of rocky coastlines and dramatic summits that appear to protrude directly from the depths of the Atlantic. Some of us should opt for a leisurely stroll around Jordan Pond followed by an afternoon cup of tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House; others could sooner see themselves scaling the cliffside Precipice or Beehive trails, mastering hand-over-hand climbing up metal rungs, each securely fastened into the rock’s face. Regardless of your hiking skill or fitness level, the park’s 120 miles of trails offer something for everyone. BLACK TRAVEL [INTERLAKEN: BEST ADVENTURE TOWN in EUROPE?]( Holy Shiggity, Interlaken was so much fun I’m not even sure where to begin. I guess let’s start with skydiving. I jumped out of a plane (13,000 feet!) without soiling myself. I went paragliding. I climbed to the top of the Swiss Alps. I think more than anything I just feel grateful. Throughout these experiences I thought about how lucky I am. Even though I’m from the number one most incarcerated zip code in the US, I’ve been able to travel, to share my experiences, and as the saying goes: It’s not where you’re from it’s where you’re at. If I can do it, you can do it. Go make your travel dreams a reality today.
