A long and happy life may be tied to a strong sense of purpose. Hereâs how to find the guiding lights of your own life. The Japanese word ikigai means âlife purpose.â Itâs about defining your personal meaning of life in relation to your talents, passions, and profession, as well as what you can give to the wider world. Adherents to this philosophy believe that finding such a nuanced sense of purpose can lead to a longer and more fulfilling existence. Neuroscientists, journalists, and ikigai enthusiasts have pointed to the longevity of certain populations to make the case that framing your life purpose in this way can help you live longer. In Tokyo, for example, the average life span is nearly 88 years for women and 81 years for men. Of course, correlation does not equal causation; still, the high degree of self-awareness and joy in the worldâs âblue zonesâ (areas in which people live significantly longer than other populations) suggests there might indeed be a connection between the pursuit of ikigai and a long life span.
