But from very early in my career, I couldn’t help but ask an entirely different question: Why? During my 25 years with the FBI, I probed the minds of some of the most prolific criminals to get those answers. On MasterClass, I’m taking you into the interrogation room where we’ll examine notorious serial killers, kidnappers, and cult leaders from the past century: Son of Sam, Charles Manson, Ed Kemper, John Wayne Gacy, and others. Through these interviews, I learned a lot about criminal behavior—including the stressors, signals, and motivations that drive us toward it. What’s more, I developed a set of methods that could be used by law enforcement to identify these factors, helping us find serial killers faster. In my class, I’ll show you how to use these same methods in everyday life—not so you can play amateur detective, but so you can understand the motives that drive us all, and spot body language and behaviors that signal manipulation and deceit. I hope that these lessons will help you navigate relationships with anyone in your life—from your cousins to your colleagues—and make more informed decisions along the way. But I also want to take you beyond the textbook. Criminal profiling isn’t just some spreadsheet that tells you who did what. I want you to pay attention the next time you feel the hair on the back of your neck stand up. That’s your intuition. Listen to it. Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
