Do you copy? We fell in love with movies at an early age, and by the fourth grade decided we wanted to tell stories for a living. But we lived in North Carolina with no industry connections, and our dreams of Hollywood seemed very far away. Eventually we made our way to a small film school in California. A few years after we graduated, we sold our first script, Hidden, but it failed to ignite our careers. It was our next idea that changed everything: Stranger Things. But our journey to success was a bumpy one, riddled with mistakes, bad scripts, failure, and rejection. There are so many things we wish we had known, which is why we wanted to teach this class: to share with you all the lessons we’ve learned. With the help of never-before-seen creative documents, we will guide you through the process of creating Stranger Things, from coming up with the idea, to building out the story and characters, to writing the pilot script, to pitching and selling the show to Netflix. Like the show itself, we hope this class is for anyone and everyone. It’s for the person who longs to write a script but doesn’t know how… for the writer who has 20 scripts in their drawer they just can’t quite finish or sell… for fans of Stranger Things who want to know exactly how the story and its characters came to life. Above all, it’s for anyone who dreams of dreaming for a living. Hope to see you in class. Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
