But over time, I think I’ve learned that what I’m doing is less about “getting it right” and more about trying to find something. Music—like writing, or dance, or cooking, or design—definitely has a technical element to it, but that’s not what it’s for. We ultimately do it to express ourselves, create meaning, and connect with other people. In any creative pursuit, sometimes when we prioritize technique, the end result will be “perfect,” but it won’t have the magic we feel when we’re really connecting with an idea, a feeling, or another person. In my class, I want to help you explore how any creative expression can get beyond technique to help us make new connections and imagine new possibilities, and you don’t need to play an instrument to do that. If you’re human, and you care about meaning and connection, and you’re a little bit curious, then you’re in the right place. We’ll explore how music gives us a way to connect, to share understanding, and to create strong communities—in other words, how it helps make us human. During our time together, musicians and listeners alike will be able to learn from intimate solo performances and collaborative sessions with two of my fellow cellists. We’ll explore something that took me a long time to learn—that technique alone does not get us to the magic of performance, which requires something much less tangible: an unbroken circle of content, communication, and reception. Whenever I teach, I try to remember the philosophy of Antonín Dvořák, the great late-19th century composer. He didn’t tell his students to do as he did, but rather to listen to the world around them, to create their own voices. His was a vision of cultural evolution, of using music to imagine and build a better future; it’s a vision that I hope you will allow me to share with you. Join me! Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
