That is the wondrous nature of fiction. While the story is fiction, the emotions are true, and that makes the story believable—one that resonates with readers. Those are the stories you can give readers if you draw from your deepest emotional memories. When I wrote my first novel, The Joy Luck Club, I was a novice. I grabbed onto guideposts wherever I could find them by reading the great novels, attending workshops, getting my manuscript critiqued, delving into written interviews with master writers, and determining what worked for me. That is what I want to share with you in my MasterClass: not rules, but insights, ideas, advice, and guideposts that you can tailor to what works for you and the stories you feel compelled to write. I will reveal to you how your own intuitions are part of your writer’s voice, how talismans can enable you to go back into childhood memories, and what imagination feels like when you let it wander. You’ll learn not only what to observe but also why it’s worth observing. And here’s another great thing: The worries, confusion, contradictions, and conflicts you have—all writers have them, and they are great sources for experimenting with characters, scenes, and narratives. I want you to experience the real work and joy of writing—the craft of it, playing with the rhythm of sentences, figuring out the advantages and limitations of different points of view, and how to simply play with the craft rather than be stymied by it. You’ll be heartened when I tell you that seasoned writers all get writer’s block and experience rejection. I have the rejection letters to prove it, and I have mental handholds for climbing out of the abyss. Most of all, as your fellow writer, I will describe the most intensely satisfying part of writing—the epiphanies, the personal truths, and experiencing at a gut level what it is to be alive. Those discoveries are all part of the art of writing a story that feels immediate and absolutely true. I hope you’re eager to get started.
