[Photo of Mark as a toddler.]( At the age of 23, he became a United States naval aviator. He deployed twice on the U.S.S. Midway and flew 39 combat missions in Operation Desert Storm. [Photo of Mark in the Navy,]( Then, at the age of 32, he was selected as an astronaut (with his twin brother, Scott!). He flew his first of four missions into space in 2001 aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour. He spent more than 50 days in space and has lived on the International Space Station. [Photo of Mark in space.]( In 2011, Mark's wife, Former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot in Tucson during an event where she was meeting with her constituents. Mark retired from the Navy and NASA, and his mission turned from service to his country to caring for his wife. But Gabby's service in Congress, using policy to improve people's lives, stuck with him. So, in 2019, Mark took on his next mission — running for U.S. Senate in Arizona — and won. Since he was sworn in, Mark has been focused every day on making Washington work for all Arizonans. And in 2022, he won again, earning a full term in the Senate. [Photo of Mark at his 2020 election victory celebration.]( Now, this campaign is looking towards the crucial election coming up this November. Arizona will be one of the most closely contested states in the country, and we’re working to beat Trump and support pro-democracy candidates up and down the ballot.
