It was down by about 0.5% from the prior month. That was good news. But core CPI (which excludes energy and food prices) accelerated. You can see how core inflation (yellow line) has been flattening in the last few weeks in the graph below: However, Germany is dealing with brutal inflation that may be pulling up Europeâs inflation. German inflation jumped to 6.7%, partly due to its rollout of ultra-cheap public transport last summer. Bloomberg Economics said that rollout alone may add 0.2% to Europeâs inflation rate. It is unusual because the next data due Thursday is expected to show the regionâs next three biggest economiesâ inflation to fall. Italy is estimated to show its headline inflation falling by 1.2 percentage points to 6.8%. As for France, a 5.4% price gain is expected with a 0.6 percentage point decline from the prior month. However, Spain is experiencing small inflation with just 1.4%. - âWe are in a situation that maybe should not require more rate hikes,â Spanish Economy Minister Nadia Calvino said. âBut I know the ECB is looking at Europe as a whole.â This shows how complicated it is for Europe to manage inflation with each country experiencing different degrees of price gains. Stay tuned. Things could become heated if the economy goes into a recession, and other members (such as Spain) will likely want hikes to stop but the central bank may have no choice if Germanyâs inflation keeps pulling up the regionâs overall number.
