It is a bet that contradicts many other money managers who predict that the BOJ will maintain its current policies for a while. - âThey could do away with yield-curve control at any time now,â said Jim Leaviss, chief investment officer of public fixed income at the money manager. âThe fundamentals of the Japanese economy do now permit a removal of YCC.â What is Leavissâs thesis? Japanese inflation accelerated in April, according to recent economic data. About two-thirds of economists surveyed by Bloomberg believe that the central bank will tighten policy in July. July is just a few weeks from now, so M&H Investments could have a case for its bullish yen bet. In the graph below, you can see how Japan's bond yields rose only slightly since 2021, while four other countries saw their yields skyrocket: Japan is worried about hiking rates too soon because it was trying to spark inflation for many years. Inflation is back now, and the economy is growing. The BOJ believes that inflation will come down on its own over the next few months. It will take red-hot inflation reading for the BOJ to change its mind as soon as this July, as M&H Investments is betting on. Currency trading is filled with speculative bets at this moment. We are at the unusual point where many central banks are making different moves. The European Central Bank and the Bank of Canada went with a rate hike in their recent meeting, while the Fed Reserve chose to pause its rate-hiking cycle.
