Central banker Jonathan Heath said the policy must remain restrictive for âas long as possibleâ to make sure inflation comes down to its 3% target. The key rate is now at 11.25%. Heath called the inflation outlook âcomplicated and uncertain,â so the bank will remain data dependent. What if the bank decides to cut rates? It wouldnât mean it signals a rate-cutting cycle, as the bank could start hiking rates again if inflation flares up. - âWe want to keep the monetary policy in the restrictive zone for as long as possible â and thatâs way more than three decisions,â Heath said. âIt has to remain in restrictive territory until weâre very sure that inflation is almost reaching our target.â Banxico recently paused its rate-hiking cycle on May 18 but will keep it unchanged for a while. Consumer price data for May fell to 5.84%. It was solid progress from the September high of 8.7%. However, core inflation is still running red-hot at 7.39% â or more than 150 basis point above the headline number. What if the Fed Reserve hikes rates? Banxico is likely to keep rates unchanged, said Heath. He also said that Banxicoâs policy decisions donât take the US central bankâs actions into account as much as before. Lastly, Heath said Mexico could eliminate its International Monetary Fund credit line, so they stop paying expenses to maintain it. Why? Mexicoâs reserves show strength.
