Then the greenback has cooled because we could be close to a peak in interest rates. However, Goldman Sachs said it has more room to strengthen than the market is forecasting. Why? Credit conditions havenât tightened as much as analysts thought after the collapse of three regional banks. Economic activity in Europe and China also came in lower than expected. - âThere is likely more room for dollar strength in the near term than what the market is pricing,â wrote Goldman analysts Michael Cahill and Lexi Kanter. âUltimately, we think total dollar depreciation for the year is more constrained than commonly believed.â Hereâs the key fundamental that Goldman analysts pointed out. A depreciation in dollar value doesnât often come from a weakened economy in the US. The country remains a haven if the whole world also sees a mild recession. Rather, a weakened dollar comes when other countries see a strong growth. So far, Goldman analysts havenât seen a legitimate option. - âThe dollar is likely to decelerate only slowly from the peak, with a number of bumps along the way, because slack in the economy remains limited so policymakers will have to keep one foot on the brake,â analysts at the bank said. âDollar depreciation is typically associated with strong growth in the rest of the world, not weak growth in the US. We are still waiting for a challenger, and the euro is not stepping into the role yet.â Yes, the European Central Bank said they are likely to go with extra rate hikes over the next few months. Its economy is doing better than expected. But their rates are still significantly lower than the US. Thereâs a lagging factor to consider here. So, the question is whether Europe can withstand higher rates once several hikes are imposed. Whatâs more, Fed Chair Jerome Powell hinted at a pause in the next meeting, but some Fed officials publicly supported another hike. Others also emphasized that a pause doesnât mean another rate hike is off the table for this year. All of this creates a lot of uncertainty around the dollar.
