Plus, a Pro Tip on anticipating pushback before implementing an ABM strategy.
Jun 06, 2019
Good morning marketers, should advertisers be prepared for the ad tech bubble to burst?
Iâm not talking about it bursting right now. But with the[antitrust mania sweeping Washington]( and swirling conversations around data protection, ad tech giants are building their garden walls even higher in an effort to safeguard against it â and somethingâs got to give.
The early signs of a major ad tech shakeup are already brewing. Last week,[Amazon announced a deal to buy Sizmekâs ad server and DCO](, making Amazon a viable contender against the current duopoly of Google and Facebook. The acquisition will enable advertisers to deliver ads through Amazonâs third-party ad server using Amazonâs data management platform (DMP) and data hosting.
It will likely be a while before we see any significant alterations to Amazonâs current ad offering, especially since the company stated Sizmek will continue to be run separately for the time being. But, if Amazon plays its cards right, it could be a much bigger competitor in the ad landscape currently dominated by Google and Facebook. And once that happens, itâll only be a matter of time before other ad tech titans attempt to follow suit.

Anticipate potential problems before rolling out an ABM strategy
âIn rolling out an ABM strategy, itâs important to anticipate pushback, as sales teams havenât been used to working with marketing,â explains Jessica Fewless of Demandbase. âDonât think of this pushback as objections, but instead, think of it as hesitation or unfamiliarity around a new way of doing things. Itâs important to educate your team on the value of an account-based approach and build a strong foundation for moving forward on an ABM strategy.â

Publishers get access to Facebook subscription tool
Facebook has been working with a select group of publishers, testing a [Subscriptions in Instant Articles tool]( designed to help deliver higher subscription rates. This week, the company rolled out the subscription tool to all eligible publishers, and shared information on a new funding tool it is testing to help smaller news outlets build financial support.
The newly introduced Subscriptions in Instant Articles tool allows publishers to clarify if a paywalled article shared via Instant Articles is part of a metered model tied to a specific number of âfree articlesâ per month or if the content is part of a âfreemiumâ model where some articles are free for all readers while others are only for subscribers.
Along with the Subscriptions in Instant Articles announcement, Facebook launched a âWelcome Screenâ feature for publishers that encourages readers to subscribe to the publisher or follow the publisherâs Facebook Page.
Facebook is also testing a new News Funding tool that has been designed specifically for local and niche publishers. Using a Facebook-based membership model, publishers can ask supporters to pay a recurring fee to finance its news gathering work in exchange for access to supporter-only content. âNews Funding is a fundamental door to get closer to our readers and involve them in the collaborative development of our journalistic work,â said the director of Animal Politico, a beta user of the News Funding tool.
