Plus, popular content marketing tools and why viewing context matters.
Mar 20, 2019
Good morning, marketers, spring is here, but itâs still Groundhog Day for Facebook.
Facebook continues to fight discriminatory ad practices and will no longer allow [advertisers promoting housing, employment or credit offers]( to target ads by age, gender or ZIP code, following terms of a settlement with the ACLU and two other civil rights groups. It is also building a tool so that users can search and view all housing ads that run on its platforms in the U.S.
Meanwhile, Instagram has launched a [new in-app checkout feature]( for a limited number of brands on the platform, making it possible for users to purchase products without leaving the app. The new feature is in closed beta, available to U.S. users only, and just over 20 brands were given access to it, including Adidas, Dior and MAC Cosmetics. Instagram said it plans to roll it out more broadly in the coming months.
How many content marketing tech platforms are you using? According to the martech management solution CabinetM, content marketing is the sixth most popular layer in the martech stacks of its customers, with Adobe Creative Cloud, WordPress and Google Docs leading the pack of [most popular content marketing tools](. âThere is no longer a clean line between content marketing and marketing technology. We are all content marketers in one way or another,â said CabinetM CEO Anita Brearton.
Thereâs more, including a Pro Tip on why context matters, and (bad) news on Facebookâs journalism initiative.

Hereâs why context matters in how viewers make choices
âWinning the war for eyeballs for media owners, platforms and brands requires not only great content, but a clear understanding of the context in which viewers make choices,â explains Peter Minnium of Ipsos US. When building a contextual framework, there are some things to take under consideration. He suggests asking these questions when developing your content marketing plan:
âWho are you viewing with? A father watching with his daughter would make a different choice than he might with his friends.
âWhat access do you have? What device, bandwidth and usage rights do you have? A phone on 4G streaming YouTube vs OTT on a smart TV with a cable package provide very different experiences.
âHow does it fit into your day? Where does viewing fit into your life in terms of time of day, time available, and location? Maybe you are streaming game highlights on the subway, scrolling through news clips between meetings, or enjoying a weekly movie night with your closest friends.
âHow salient are your program choices? Everyone has a show that they have âbeen meaning to get toâ after reading about it online, seeing a trailer, and/or hearing about it from friends and coworkers. The most salient programs will be purposefully sought out or at least recognized and selected when viewers see their names on-screen.â
