The protective and profit power of options in bear markets

[Company Logo] The 2022 bear market has required nearly everyone to adapt to a new type of market, and for many, it has not been easy. Having traded for over 30 years, we understand how difficult adapting can be. Fortunately, sometimes focusing on one new and simple trading tactic is all you need to do to adapt and remain or become a successful trader successfully. The chart below illustrates one example of adapting to succeed. Your “adaption” is to focus on a simple options strategy that profits when markets decline. In the chart of the S&P 500 ETF (SPY) below, I’ve pointed to times in 2022 when we purchased “Put” options (these make money when the market declines) in one of four major market ETFs DIA, SPY, QQQ, or IWM. If you don’t know how a Put option works, don’t worry, I’ll explain. I also noted the percentage gains on each trade. To be transparent, these are not our only Put trades in 2022; there were more. Whether you were to use these trades as a hedge or as a directional swing trade, the positive impact they could have on your account is probably obvious.
