[Download the App!]( Tired of being "ghosted" by recruiters? We asked Manpower recruiter Emma Wakefield to share some insider knowledge behind recruiter behavior, and tips for when to act. How can candidates navigate being ghosted by recruiters? The best defense is a good offense. In this current job market, where Recruiters are getting inundated with phone calls and applications from people looking for work, the best place to start is the resume. Make sure your resume is up to date, the dates are accurate, gaps in employment are explained and each job has bullet points of the job responsibilities. If youâre sending an Indeed resume, make sure you know what is being submitted for you because Indeed often goes rogue. Thereâs no excuse not to be able to put together a resume with the free technology thatâs out there (ChatGPT, Google Templates, Word Templates, etc.). If you have a solid resume and great communication skills, you will not be ghosted by a good Recruiter. If Recruiters have to wait for you to update your resume, fix typos, return calls, etc. chances are the job will be filled by the time you get around to doing the things that should have been done in the first place and thatâs probably why youâre being ghosted. If the job doesnât work out for you, but you have a solid resume, work experience to back it up, and good communication skills, youâll be the first person a good Recruiter will reach out to the next time thereâs an opening. Is there a âbest timeâ to follow up? This is hard because itâs subjective since every recruiter has their own process. I prefer an email checking in. It doesnât really matter what time of day you email because our days never look the same. With an email, the recruiter wonât feel caught off guard or be in the middle of something when you call. If they are reading your email, they have time to read it and can give you their full attention in response. Is there a time when they shouldnât? Following up is a good thing. Itâs more important how you follow up with your recruiter. When youâre in an interview or speaking with your recruiter, I recommend asking them how they prefer you follow up and how often. This helps build the relationship between candidate and recruiter because it shows that youâre both respecting each otherâs time. When is it not ghosting, but the recruiter is doing their best behind the scenes? If itâs something that is out of the recruiterâs control, it is not ghosting. This includes anything to do with background or drug tests, reference checks, getting security and systems set up, obtaining feedback from a hiring manager, etc. The recruiter is the communicator between all parties involved, not a gatekeeper.
