Click on 'load images' or 'always allow images for this sender']  This human research was carried out at the University of Reading in the UK. The findings were published in the European Journal of Nutrition.  Population research indicates that people who consume fruit have healthier and more efficient brains. “Epidemiological evidence suggests that chronic consumption of fruit-based flavonoids is associated with cognitive benefits.”  This research was designed to see whether these brain benefits were fast acting – and whether the flavonoids in the fruits were responsible. “The acute effects of flavonoid rich fruit drinks on cognition require examination.”  So, the researchers recruited 24 healthy men between the ages of 30 and 65 years old for the research.  The men were put through a number of tests analyzing their mental performance – to see their sharpness and how often they made good decisions.  These tests were performed when the men were given orange juice with a known amount of flavonoids.  The tests were also carried out when the men were given an orange flavored drink with the same amount and type of sugars – but without flavonoids.  The researchers tested brain performance and mood 2 hours and 6 hours after consuming drinks.  Neither the men, nor the researchers knew which drink they were taking. The study showed significant improvements in executive function in men given the real fruit juice with flavonoids.  Executive function is the top level decision-making parameter of the brain – it oversees all other mental faculties. “Performance on tests of cognitive function were significantly better following the flavonoid rich orange drink compared to the placebo.”  Not only were the men making better decisions – they were faster. “Change from baseline revealed that psychomotor speed was significantly better following the flavonoid rich orange drink compared to placebo.”  The men also felt much better when they had the real fruit juice drink. They reported feeling much more alert. “Those effects were supported by significant benefits for subjective alertness reported by the participants following the flavonoid rich orange drink compared to placebo.”  Fruit juices contain sugar – which is great fuel for the brain.  But this research shows that the benefits of oranges and other fruits are far more profound than simply supplying raw energy.  The researchers believe that the orange flavonoids improve decision-making and reaction times. “These data demonstrate the consumption of flavonoid rich orange juice can quickly enhance objective and subjective mental function over the course of 6 hours in healthy middle-aged men.”  They may be right.  These flavonoids can have a whole host of benefits right throughout the body.  But there may be even more going on here – because the research didn’t control for minerals like potassium and magnesium.  These minerals are contained in fruit juices – but would not have been in the other sugary beverage used in these experiments.  The minerals themselves could well be responsible for some of the benefits in mental performance seen in this and other studies looking at orange juices.  It’s not just orange juice that contains the beneficial flavonoids.  In fact, they are found in greater amounts in the peel of oranges.  This is another reason why high quality marmalade (made with cooked orange peel) is a very undervalued superfood.  ----Important Message From Matt About Boosting Brain Power----  How to use this new form of vitamin C to boost brain power  Part of the reason why oranges are so good for the brain is vitamin C.  Vitamin C relaxes the blood vessels all over the body, improving blood flow to all of the organs, including the brain.  And the brain needs good blood flow in order to fire up all the neurons and perform.  So in this way, Vitamin C helps protect and even boost cognitive function:  [Can't see this image?
