It affects about one in seven people – and it can change your life completely. What’s worse, migraines are notoriously difficult to treat. Most of the commonly used treatments only work for a minority of people. And most of those can have quite severe side-effects. But there are a number of natural solutions which can be very effective in treating migraines…. One of these is cinnamon. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed that cinnamon reduces the frequency, severity and duration of migraine. Cinnamon also lowered inflammatory biomarkers of migraines – showing that it’s probably more than a placebo effect. [Can't see this image? Click on 'load images' or 'always allow images for this sender'] The human study was carried out at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences in Iran. The results were published in the Journal of Phytotherapy Research. Migraines are a complex issue – actually it seems to be a number of different problems which lead to similar symptoms. But most commonly migraine occurs because blood vessels inside the brain become dilated (expanded) while the body releases high levels of inflammatory proteins and peptides. Nitric oxide seems to be mainly responsible for blood vessel dilation -- a major migraine trigger. CGRP and IL-6 are inflammatory markers also elevated in migraines which probably contribute a lot to the pain. “Migraine is the most common type of primary headache. Increased levels of IL-6, CGRP and nitric oxide lead to inflammation and pain.” Cinnamon is not just a food flavoring, but it’s also a very old herbal remedy. And science has shown that it’s quite a potent anti-inflammatory. Cinnamon has been traditionally used for migraine in a number of different countries. Researchers decided to carry out a high quality scientific experiment to see if and how cinnamon works. So the researchers recruited 50 people with migraine who also had high levels of these inflammatory markers in their blood. “Cinnamon has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of cinnamon on migraine attacks and inflammatory status.” 50 participants were split into two groups. Both groups were given three capsules to take every day. Group 1 received cinnamon in their capsules. The second group received inactive capsules. “Fifty patients with migraine were randomized to receive either cinnamon powder or three placebo capsules/day each containing 100 mg of corn starch for 2 months.” The researchers took blood samples before and after the two month experimental period. At the same time, the participants completed questionnaires about their migraine frequency, severity and duration. People taking cinnamon had lower levels of nitric oxide – the gas which causes blood vessels in the brain to expand – which is closely linked to migraine. Cinnamon also lowered  IL-6 – an inflammatory protein also linked to migraine. “IL-6 and NO were significantly reduced in the cinnamon group compared with the control group.” The other migraine marker (CGRP) was not altered. Most importantly, cinnamon seems to lead to great improvements in migraine. People taking cinnamon had less frequent migraines. The migraines were less severe. And the migraines did not last as long. “The frequency, severity and duration of migraine attacks were significantly decreased in the cinema group compared with the control group.” The study raises the possibility that cinnamon could be an effective and safe migraine treatment for many people who have not yet found a safe solution to this debilitating problem. It is important to point out that there are a few different types of cinnamon. This study used 600mg of Ceylon cinnamon three times per day. Some types of cinnamon are slightly toxic to the liver – but Ceylon cinnamon is far safer than other types. It also seems to be more potent as a herbal remedy. I have written previous articles about the benefits of cinnamon lowering blood sugar and potentially staving off dementia. The blood sugar lowering effect of cinnamon is something you should take into account if you are ever going to try it. It’s one of those supplements that you should start with a very low dose. ----Important Message From Matt Cook---- Want prediabetes and diabetes symptoms to disappear? [Can't see this image?
