- [All or some of the above]( ---------- This one Mediterranean food can help prevent Alzheimer’s A Mediterranean-type diet is often associated with a lower risk of chronic disease. Numerous studies have found that the Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. There may be many reasons for this… But recently scientists have proved that compounds in olives could help fight Alzheimer’s. Olives are an integral part of the Mediterranean diet. [Can't see this image? Click on 'load images' or 'always allow images for this sender'] These cell and animal experiments were carried out at the Charles Sturt University, Wagga Wagga in Australia. The results were published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. Alzheimer’s is associated with a buildup of problematic proteins in the brain. “Alzheimer’s disease is associated with an abnormal accumulation and clearance of proteins known as amyloid beta and tau in the brain.” First the researchers extracted compounds from olives. They tested the effects of these olive compounds (biophenols) on the levels of the Alzheimer’s proteins in cells. The olive biophenols prevented damage to the cells associated with Alzheimer’s disease. “The pre-treated cells with olive biophenols were able to attenuate cell death and toxicity after 24 h of treatment.” They conducted further tests looking at the individual biophenols and identified some of the most effective olive oil compounds. “Oleuropein, verbascoside and rutin were the major anti-amyloidogenic compounds.” Next the researchers moved on to the important animal experiments. This investigation involved the use of genetically modified mice. These mice were designed in order to rapidly develop signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. The mice were split into two groups. One of these groups was given an extract of Olive Leaf. “Transgenic mice (received 50 mg/kg of oleuropein containing olive leaf extracts or control diet from 7 to 23 weeks of age.” The olive leaf extract contained large amounts of olive biophenols, particularly the most effective one -- oleuropein. After 16 weeks the researchers examined the brains of the mice for changes related to Alzheimer’s disease progression. Animals treated with olive leaf extract had much fewer signs of Alzheimer’s disease in the brain. “Treated mice showed significantly reduced amyloid plaque deposition in cortex and hippocampus as compared to control mice.” The study proves that olives contain compounds that can significantly decrease the effect of Alzheimer’s disease in the brain. These compounds could be developed into an effective treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. “Our findings provide a basis for a natural and low cost treatment from olive as a promising candidate ‘treatment’ against Alzheimer’s disease.” Alzheimer’s disease treatments are not very effective and come with a long list of potential side-effects. “Synthetic ‘treatments’ used in Alzheimer’s disease are not free from side effects, serious interactions and limitations.” Recently researchers have found that compounds in coffee can have similar effects. But this is the first research looking at olive biophenols. “To the best of our knowledge, no study has examined the direct inhibitory activity of different components of major olive biophenols as an individual or extracts.” Olive leaf extract supplements have been available for quite some time. Though good research is limited -- the supplement is claimed to help with inflammation, arthritis, cognitive decline, blood pressure, and even diabetes. The effect of these biophenols might explain some of the health benefits associated with the Mediterranean diet. [Can't see this image? There are many clues in the scientific literature that Mediterranean diet could be protective against chronic disease. “There is converging evidence that composite dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet is related to lower risk for cardiovascular disease, several forms of cancer, and overall mortality.” This study focused on Alzheimer’s. “We sought to investigate the association between the Mediterranean diet and risk for Alzheimer’s disease.” They looked at the risk of Alzheimer's disease among thousands of people. They then compared the risk in people eating a Mediterranean style diet against other diets. The researchers proved that people eating a Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of Alzheimer’s. “Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with lower risk for Alzheimer’s disease.” People who strictly adhered to the Mediterranean diet, high in olives, had a 40% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. “Those at the highest tertile had a hazard ratio of 0.60.” Beneficial compounds found in olives may be part of the reason why the Mediterranean diet is associated with a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease. ----Important Message---- Warning: Avoid this food if you want a laser sharp memory (and probably avoid dementia) I’ve made a shocking discovery… ...that our food is being knowingly contaminated with a toxic chemical that leads to fat gain, blood flow problems, even dementia... And the FDA and pharmaceutical companies are complicit in hiding this from the average American. In fact, you won’t find this additive on the food labels for that reason. And since it’s almost impossible to avoid, since too many foods contain this toxin… ...what do we do? How do we stop it? Fortunately, I’ve been working on that and [it’s called the Kraepelin method -- use it today to start protecting against this toxin and diseases like Alzheimer’s]( ---------- Daily Medical Discoveries is dedicated to uncovering secret, buried or censored studies that can help men live great lives to 120 and beyond.
