This also naturally lowers cholesterol -- [here’s how...]( ---------- Beware this OTC treatment for acid reflux -- carries cancer risk One of the things that drives me the most crazy about Big Pharma is that there is very little long-term follow-up on treatments once they are approved for market. This is the case even though the risk of things such as cancer and cardiovascular disease can take more than a decade to show up. What makes this worse is that many of the most profitable treatments that Big Pharma sells are meds that people take every single day – sometimes for decades. It’s completely irresponsible not to have further follow-up studies. [Can't see this image? Click on 'load images' or 'always allow images for this sender'] Yet that is the way it goes. The FDA is being pretty casual about some of this. You may have seen in the news that Zantac (a treatment for acid reflux) poses a cancer risk because of potential contamination by a carcinogen called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). This triggered a recall in many other countries, but not in the United States. Instead, the FDA simply said on September 13 of 2019: “The US Food and Drug Administration has learned that some ranitidine medicines, including some products commonly known as the brand-name drug Zantac, contain a nitrosamine impurity called N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) at low levels. NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer) based on results from laboratory tests. NDMA is a known environmental contaminant and found in water and foods, including meats, dairy products, and vegetables.” This statement tries to make people feel better about the risk by burying it in other data. However, the risk still exists. Then on September 24 they issued a VOLUNTARY recall in the US: “The US Food and Drug Administration is alerting health care professionals and patients of a voluntary recall of 14 lots of prescription ranitidine capsules distributed by Sandoz Inc., used to decrease the amount of acid created by the stomach. This recall is due to a nitrosamine impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), which was found in the recalled medicine. NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer).” Voluntary recalls mean that they don’t deem the threat serious enough to make it a mandatory recall – and that this medicine may still be selling in the US. To me, this is alarming because the FDA seems to be favoring the profits of Big Pharma over the health of consumers. That is NOT good. The Zantac voluntary recall is only the tip of the iceberg. The real problem here is that this very casual attitude toward a problem with Zantac is only the tip of the iceberg. There are tons of other medicines on the market that pose a VERY real cancer risk. You can hear the disclaimers on TV ads for biologic treatments that are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. [Can't see this image? Click on 'load images' or 'always allow images for this sender'] Here is part of the disclaimer from Humira: “Lymphoma and other malignancies, some fatal, have been reported in children and adolescent patients treated with TNF blockers, including HUMIRA. Postmarketing cases of hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL), a rare type of T-cell lymphoma, have been reported in patients treated with TNF blockers, including HUMIRA. These cases have had a very aggressive disease course and have been fatal.” This alarming information in the ads is usually covered up by smiling people and happy music... Because Big Pharma doesn’t want you to think about the bad side effects of these drugs. There are tons more examples of this. But the big thing is that you consider ALL of your risks before you take anything – and don’t assume it’s safe. The bottom line... There are many treatments on the market that come with black-box cancer risks. And my guess is that there are even more that pose cardiovascular, cancer, or diabetes risks that we just don’t know about because there aren’t enough rigorous studies done.
