The banaba is a medium-sized tree native to tropical South Asia. It is used as a herbal remedy in many countries in the region. One of its traditional uses is as an anti-diabetic herb – to lower blood sugar. And there are some animal and human studies confirming the anti-diabetic properties of banaba. [Can't see this image? The Journal of Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice published the results. Banaba leaf is a popular folk medicine all across South Asia. “In Southeast Asia and the Philippines, a tea from the banaba leaves has been used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus.” Animal research has shown that the leaf lowers blood sugar. “The hypoglycemic effect of banaba leaf has been demonstrated in animal and in vitro studies.” Prior to this research, most of the data came from studies on rodents. “When diabetic mice (type 2) were fed a diet containing banaba leaf extract for 5 weeks, their elevated blood glucose was significantly suppressed.” But this study set out to prove the usefulness of banaba leaf extract for human diabetics. The researchers collected wild banaba leaf and used the dried leaves to make a strong extract using alcohol. They standardized the extract to contain 1% corosolic acid. (Researchers believe that corosolic is the active compound in banaba.) The researchers called the banaba extract “Glucosol.” They tested two different delivery mechanisms. “Glucosol was provided...either a soft gelatin capsule as a suspension in a vegetable oil base or in a hard gelatin capsule as a powder.” The study recruited volunteers with type 2 diabetes and used 10 volunteers between the ages of 55 and 70 for the final study. The recruits were selected for high blood sugar. Most of the reported effect of banaba leaf is on blood sugar. “The inclusion criteria were such that the basal blood glucose levels were between 140 and 250 mg/dl.” The participants were split into two groups of five. One group got the oil-based capsule. The other group got the powder-based capsule. “The first group received Glucosol soft gel formulation and the second group received Glucosol hard gelatin capsule formulation.” In addition, the researchers tested three different doses. Participants used 16 mg, 32 mg, and 48 mg for 15 days each. There was a 10-day break between testing each dose. “Five subjects in each group received a daily oral dose for 15 days of either a soft gelatin or hard gelatin formulation of 16, 32, and 48 mg Glucosol.” Every dosage size of Glucosol banaba leaf extract lowered blood sugar. “Both soft-gel and hard-gel formulations of Glucosol showed a drop over the dose range of 16–48 mg per day.” Both of the supplement formulations worked… But the oil-based soft gel was more effective. “Glucosol at daily dosages of 32 and 48 mg for 2 weeks showed a significant reduction in the blood glucose levels.” The reduction in blood glucose at the higher dose range was significant. “A statistically significant reduction in blood glucose level was observed at the 48 mg per day dose in both formulations.” In the hard-gel formulation, 48 mg lowered blood sugar by 20%. And in the soft-gel formulation, 48 mg lowered blood sugar about 30%. “Subjects who received Glucosol in the soft-gel form showed a 30% decrease in their blood glucose.” Standardized banaba leaf extract (Glucosol) is effective at lowering blood sugar levels in diabetics. And the delivery mechanism matters too. “The soft-gel formulation has a better bioavailability than a dry-powder formulation.” More research needs to be conducted into the safety of banaba leaf and corosolic acid. But it could turn out to be a very useful plant for diabetics. You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about diagnosing and treating any health problems. ----Important Message---- Why does this special breakfast help reverse blood sugar problems?
