Blood tests don’t tell the whole story…
And a “normal” blood test doesn’t always show an accurate representation of how a nutrient or hormone will actually work in your body.
This happens all the time with testosterone tests.
Your blood says you have enough testosterone, but your body is acting like it has a testosterone deficiency (but that’s for a different article).
And this seems to be happening with thiamine tests as well.
Thiamine is a B vitamin that combats fatigue and is detectable by a simple blood test.
And the blood test will show if you have a “normal” thiamine level in your blood.
What the blood test DOESN’T show is how well your body is USING thiamine…
And if it’s not using it as well as it should be, then even if the blood test shows you have enough thiamine in your blood, you may experience significant fatigue.
The good news is that if you are experiencing major fatigue there may be a simple approach that can help.
Three studies, three kinds of patients, same result
These are small studies and we need to see more research on this.
But they’re interesting because they are on three entirely different groups of patients and all three get the exact same result – a huge reduction or elimination in fatigue.
The first group of patients had irritable bowel disease.
“In this pilot study, we treated fatigue in eight patients with ulcerative colitis and four patients affected by Crohn's disease from January to April 2011.”
The second group of patients had suffered a stroke.
“Three patients with stroke who also experienced fatigue were recruited.”
The third group of patients had multiple sclerosis.
“We recruited 15 patients with MS who also experienced fatigue and assessed the severity of the fatigue using the Fatigue Severity Scale.”
All of the patients had high levels of fatigue and NORMAL blood levels of thiamine.
But in all three cases the researchers thought that the fatigue could STILL BE CAUSED by a thiamine deficiency.
The theory was that some of the thiamine in the blood wasn’t being used properly by the cells – and THAT was causing the fatigue, not other factors.
“...to demonstrate that fatigue and other disorders related to ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are the manifestation of an intracellular mild thiamine deficiency and not due to malabsorption, augmented requirements, or nutritional factors, and that this dysfunction is curable with high doses of thiamine administered orally or parenterally.”
So, they administered a high dose of thiamine either orally or intravenously to each of the patients in the irritable bowel disease, stroke, and MS groups.
Amazingly, in all three groups the fatigue either went away completely or got significantly better.
Irritable bowel syndrome:
“Ten patients out of twelve showed complete regression of fatigue, while the remaining two patients showed nearly complete regression of fatigue compared to the chronic fatigue syndrome scale scores before therapy.”
Stroke:
“The therapy led to an appreciable improvement of fatigue.”
Multiple sclerosis:
“The administration of large quantities of thiamine was effective in reversing the fatigue in MS.”
The scientists think this is because when diseases like this occur they are accompanied by a dysfunction in the way that the body processes thiamine.
“...manifestation of mild thiamine deficiency due to a dysfunction of intracellular transport of thiamine or to structural enzymatic abnormalities...”
Here’s the good news:
If you’re experiencing fatigue from an illness or just being run down, then thiamine may be an easy fix.
Thiamine is pretty safe to take and widely available on Amazon and health food sites (often sold as B1).
In the study, the patients were given 600 to 1500 mg a day for 20 days and saw significant improvement in their fatigue levels.
Always check with your doctor to make sure it’s safe for you.
But if you suffer with any disease that comes with chronic fatigue I think this is worth giving it a try.
