Researchers in Japan conducted an experiment using an herbal remedy in men suffering from varicoceles. They found that the herbal blend could get rid of varicoceles in 80% of cases. The American Journal of Chinese Medicine published the results. Varicoceles are a major cause of infertility in men. “It is well known that varicocele disturbs spermatogenesis, whereas semen quality is often improved following the disappearance of this condition.” The study recruited 37 infertile men, all of whom had a varicocele. “37 patients, who visited our outpatient clinic with a complaint of male infertility were included in the study. They were diagnosed to have varicocele.” They tested and quantified the participants’ semen.  Then they gave them the herbal medicine Guizhi-Fuling-Wan for a period of at least three months. “Thirty-seven infertile patients with varicocele were treated with Guizhi-Fuling-Wan (7.5 g/day) for at least 3 months.” The herbal medicine is a blend of five different herbs used in Asian herbal medicine. The treatment resulted in the disappearance of varicocele in 80% of cases. “A varicocele disappearance rate of 80% was obtained with 40 out of 50 varicocele.” The researchers also found similar improvements in sperm quality. Sperm concentration and motility improved in more than 60% of the men treated. “Improvement of sperm concentration and motility were found in 71.4% and 62.1% of patients, respectively.” This herbal remedy seems to be remarkably effective at treating varicocele and varicocele related infertility. “From these results, Guizhi-Fuling-Wan is considered to be effective for circulation disorders in varicocele as well as semen quality.” The results are similar to the best outcomes from surgery. “Disappearance rate of varicocele in the study is found to be 80% overall, which is not far off the non-recurrence rate of 89% in high ligation.” The improvement in sperm concentration and motility are even better than the best outcomes of surgery. “Effective rates of the agent assessed with the present criteria were; sperm concentrations 71% and motility 62%, which were similar to the improvement rate of semen quality obtained by surgery at 58 to 71%.” The Japanese researchers even state that this herbal remedy should be the first-choice treatment for varicocele. “Guizhi-Fuling-Wan may be the first choice for treatment of grade 1 varicocele.” Though the research was carried out in Japan, Guizhi-Fuling-Wan is actually a Chinese herbal remedy. It is usually sold in pill form where the five herbs are dissolved in honey. The oldest writings about this medicine are almost 2,000 years old.  It appeared in a Chinese medicinal text called Essential Prescriptions from the Golden Cabinet (dated to between 150–219 AD). Guizhi-Fuling-Wan has been in extensive use in much of Asia for at least 1,500 years, where it is considered very safe. It is also used to treat inflammatory skin problems, endometriosis, neuropathy from type 2 diabetes, and atherosclerosis. The blend of five herbs contains many active plant compounds. Just how it works on various illnesses is still not properly understood.
