Blueberries are a great source of polyphenol compounds. Recently, researchers have investigated the theory that blueberry polyphenols could prevent obesity. They found that the blueberry extract could prevent detrimental changes to gut bacteria that cause obesity. Blueberries or a blueberry polyphenol extract could help fight against obesity and other metabolic problems. [DMD_06-25-19_IMG1] can't see this image? Click on "load images" or "always allow images for this sender" These researchers carried out animal experiments at Shenyang Agricultural University in China and published their results in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry. Polyphenols are compounds found in a number of foods. The colorful skins of fruits often contain very high levels of polyphenols. In recent years there’s been a lot of research showing the health benefits of various fruit-based polyphenols. “Polyphenols are known for their various health benefits.” But research into healthy polyphenols has largely ignored blueberries. “Blueberries are dietary sources of polyphenols with reported health benefits. However, the role of blueberry polyphenols in alleviating obesity is not completely understood.” So the researchers conducted an animal experiment looking at the effects of blueberry polyphenols on obesity. In the experiment, they fed some mice a standard diet. They fed another group of mice a high-fat diet that tends to make them obese and diabetic. And they fed the third group of mice on the high-fat diet, but they also supplemented this group with blueberry polyphenols. “This study investigated the potential positive effect of blueberry polyphenol extract on high-fat diet induced obesity in mice by modulation of the gut microbiota.” As expected, the mice on the high-fat diet became obese and unhealthy. “Mice fed the high-fat diet exhibited increased body weight, fat tissue, and disordered lipid metabolism.” But mice on the high-fat diet supplemented with blueberry polyphenols had much less fat gain. The blood lipids of the animals on blueberry polyphenols were also normalized. “In contrast, blueberry polyphenol extract inhibited body weight gain and returned lipid metabolism to normal.” Obesity research has shown that changes to the bacteria within the gut cause obesity. In mice, the high-fat diet feeds certain types of bad bacteria. These bacteria then lead to obesity and other metabolic problems such as type 2 diabetes. The research showed that the blueberry polyphenols affected gut bacteria. “Blueberry polyphenol extract changed the composition of the gut microbiota in the mice and modulated specific bacteria.” The polyphenols in blueberries act as a food source for good gut bacteria. Blueberry polyphenols could protect against obesity by feeding healthy gut bacteria. “Blueberry polyphenol extract, as a potential prebiotic agent, influences the gut microbiota to positively affect obesity in mice.” The research supports a lot of previous evidence that links polyphenols to improved metabolic health. “Polyphenols, the major active constituents in blueberry, have been known to ameliorate disordered lipid metabolism, hyperglycemia, and metabolic syndrome.” What’s more, the animals given blueberry polyphenol extract ate significantly less food than the other animals on the high-fat diet. “Supplementation with blueberry polyphenol extract caused a significant reduction of food intake.” Polyphenols could decrease the appetite problems associated with an unhealthy diet. “The results indicate that blueberry polyphenol extract inhibited the appetite of the mice.” Citrus fruits and coffee are the most well researched foods in terms of their beneficial polyphenol content. Blueberries can be added to the list of foods that contain beneficial polyphenols compounds. “This study indicated that blueberry polyphenols, as natural active ingredients, may be potential prebiotics that modulate the gut microbiota to target obesity and its complications.” You should always consult a healthcare practitioner about treating and diagnosing health-related problems. ----Important Message About Gut Health---- Breakthrough diabetes fix - “reverses diabetes” even for men who have been diabetic for 30 years Here’s how the breakthrough works.
