Propecia, a popular hair loss drug, has been shown to create persistent sexual side effects even after you discontinue treatment. Scientists already knew that Propecia had sexual side effects… But they thought that, once you went off the drug, the sexual side effects would go away and normal performance would return. However, for some men that’s not the case.  The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency of the United Kingdom and the Swedish Medical Products Agency have updated their patient information leaflets to include this statement: “...persistence of erectile dysfunction after discontinuation of treatment with Propecia has been reported in post-marketing use.” In this study, they wanted to see exactly what kind of sexual side effects men were getting from Propecia after they stopped using it.   And they wanted to know if it was just ED (which is awful) or if there were other side effects as well.  “We conducted standardized interviews with 71 otherwise healthy men aged 21–46 years who reported the new onset of sexual side effects associated with the temporal use of finasteride, in which the symptoms persisted for at least 3 months despite the discontinuation of finasteride.” The results of this study are scary! Like, keep-me-up-at-night scary. Men reported many different types of sexual side effects – not just ED.   These included lower sex drive, not being able to get aroused as easily, and problems having an orgasm. “Subjects reported new-onset persistent sexual dysfunction associated with the use of finasteride: 94% developed low libido, 92% developed erectile dysfunction, 92% developed decreased arousal, and 69% developed problems with orgasm.”  As you can see from the above, the men who ended up with long-term side effects didn’t get just one symptom, they often got multiple symptoms. But what makes this even more alarming is that these sexual dysfunction symptoms lasted a long time – with a mean average of over 40 months! That’s more than three years.  THREE YEARS. Holy crud! I would never want to deal with preventable sexual dysfunction for three years! “The mean duration of finasteride use was 28 months and the mean duration of persistent sexual side effects was 40 months from the time of finasteride cessation to the interview date.” While these side effects aren’t super-common, they do happen often enough that I would personally never risk taking this drug – especially since it’s for a cosmetic issue...
