There’s a huge myth that all it takes to lose weight is willpower…
Because that’s only kind of true… but it doesn’t tell the whole story…
Willpower IS often required to lose weight.
But willpower alone isn’t usually enough…
Instead, you have to set yourself up for “willpower success.”
Let’s take a look at the data…

The hormones of weight loss
There are two hormones that trigger the body to eat: leptin and ghrelin…
These hormones are activated when you restrict your calorie intake in order to lose weight.
The role of these hormones is to make you want to eat.
“Two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, are known to trigger the body to eat in a weight-loss setting. Previous research confirms that these hormone levels change rapidly when weight is shed.”
This doesn’t just happen to some people – it happens to everybody.
It’s our body’s way to keep us from starving to death…
And, overall, that’s a really good thing.
But this does make losing weight really difficult for many people.
Now, some people are able to ignore these hormonal signals and lose weight anyway.
The big question is “how do they do that?”
“Everybody who loses weight sees this change in leptin and ghrelin...It is just that some people, for reasons we do not know, are able to maintain their self-regulation in the face of that signal.”
How to stand strong in the face of those hormones...
It turns out that people who were able to lose weight in this study had the most activity in the areas of the brain that govern self-control.
For many people, self-control equals willpower.
But they are not exactly the same thing.
“In the fMRI, the self-control area increased its activity and the value area decreased its activity...And the amount of change was predictive of successful weight loss.”
“While all participants lost weight, those who achieved the greatest weight loss had fMRI levels indicating a better ability to self-control.”
Willpower is inherent, but self-control can be LEARNED.
You can learn self-control through various techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy and meditation.
That means you can give yourself an edge against the deluge of hunger hormones when trying to lose weight.
The effort is really worth it too.
If you can manage to stay on track for three months, those hunger hormones (leptin and ghrelin) end up resetting to baseline…
Meaning you end up staying at the new weight more easily without tons of cravings.
“And, at the end of the 3-month study, the hormones ghrelin and leptin were starting to return to baseline, suggesting that a new set point was achieved.”
But it doesn’t matter how much you’ve built up your self-control.
If you do the wrong things to lose weight (and many of the wrong things are peddled by the popular gurus) you could damage your health.
The Matt Cook approach to weight loss
Right now, there are two big fads for losing weight that are super-bad for you.
One is to cut carbs like crazy, and the other is to add tons of fat to your diet.
Both of these methods can send your body into metabolic syndrome and put you at risk for developing diabetes – because it’s fat and not sugar that triggers diabetes (more on that here).
What we teach instead (and our students are getting GREAT results) is a very different way of eating that includes Coke and rice as well as specific lean meats and fruits and veggies.
Most people find this to be a much easier plan to follow long-term and lose a lot of weight.
In the meantime, if you want to lose weight, it’s a good idea to strengthen your self-control skills.
Meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy are both good tools for this.
