Home prices soared in July at the fastest rate in two years, according to a CoreLogic report. These numbers are elevated 5.5% year-over-year and 1.2% over the previous month. This fits the the Maganomics theme of increased demand amid the exodus from cities, coupled with low interest rates.
Construction spending also increased slightly in July, which is a good sign considering that industry wasn’t particularly hard-hit during the season of the virus because it was considered “essential.” Breaking down the numbers, nonresidential spending is down a bit (does anyone need a new skyscraper during a lockdown?), but it has been offset by public spending.
Speaking of lockdowns, debate is raging this week on how to handle school reopenings. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio caved to the teachers’ union and delayed the start of in-person education for the nation’s biggest school district. New York youngsters will return to class September 21, at least unless the restart is delayed again.
As Breitbart previously reported, the CDC has said that school closures have had a negative public health effect. Mayor de Blasio has consistently buckled to public-sector union pressure during the reopening debate, and there’s no reason to suggest that trend won’t continue.
On the flip side, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said defiantly that his state will never lock down again, no matter what.
Relief package chatter increased over the last day or so. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said the Senate is likely to introduce a new relief package next week. It’ll likely be relatively small, around $500 billion in stimulus, and will be met with heavy skepticism from House Democrats.
