Our children deserve to feel safe at school {NAME}, Last night, I went to sleep knowing the sorrow so many across the country would be feeling today. I knew I would be waking up to the five-year anniversary of the Parkland shooting. Folks like my friend Fred Guttenberg woke up this morning to the five-year anniversary of the death of his daughter, Jaime. As Fred said in an interview a few days ago, “It still feels like five minutes ago.” I know that feeling deeply. In a cruel twist, we awoke on this somber morning to details of another mass shooting on campus – this time at Michigan State University. Three students were killed and five others were injured last night. School shootings (and all mass shootings) are a uniquely American problem. From Columbine to Newtown to Parkland and too many other high-profile shootings to count, our federal government refuses to take action to end this epidemic of violence. After the Parkland shooting – after watching children, the same age of my son, stream out of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with their hands in the air – and after the inaction by members of Congress who ignored the deaths of 17 high school students, I knew I had to do more. I stepped up to run for Congress in a race that pundits and prognosticators said I couldn’t win. They said I was “too late to enter,” and that I should just think about running for the state legislature instead. I knew my community better. I knew that folks would connect with the story of my son Jordan, who was shot and killed in 2012. I knew that as a victim of gun violence, I needed to stand up, speak out, and tell my family’s story on the campaign trail – and fight to prevent any other mothers from going through the same pain that I did. Today, families and community members in Parkland, East Lansing, and all around America are hurting. I am grieving with all of you in heart, and in spirit. As survivors of gun violence, we must continue to tell our stories, work together, and give each other support, love, and hope. When we speak up about our stories, we grow our political power to fight the gun lobby and make these tragedies a thing of the past. Never stay silent. With love, – Lucy Lucy is committed to fighting for gun safety, democracy, and reproductive rights, and she needs our movement to continue standing strong beside her.
