The American flag lapel worn by politicians across the political spectrum is symbolic of our duty to the American people as elected representatives. It signifies that despite our disagreements, we’re all fighting for the same nation. By replacing it with an AR-15 pin, these extremist Republicans are making a statement – that their loyalty lies with the gun lobby and far-right base that continually ignores the epidemic of gun violence that is tearing us apart. I’m disappointed to see my colleagues lean further into the culture wars. Tone-deaf is an understatement. This gesture speaks volumes about the priorities of Republicans in Congress. They spend their time concocting symbolic gestures rather than crafting policies and passing laws that actually improve the lives of Americans.
