How far our movement has come in eight years:

Today is not easy for me. My son Jordan was murdered on Black Friday eight years ago when our laws failed him. It was 2012. The movement to prevent gun violence was small, but it was during this time that so many people were awakening to the epidemic of gun violence in our country. Just a few weeks after Jordan’s murder, we all witnessed the tragedy at Newtown. We mourned as a nation, but it was in these tragedies that our movement was born. Like me, families in Newtown were turning their pain into purpose, and my friend Senator Chris Murphy, who was on the cusp of being sworn into his first term in the Senate, found his life’s mission. A woman in Indianapolis was starting a Facebook group to organize moms to fight for laws to prevent gun violence. That group would ultimately become Moms Demand Action and is how I met my dear friend Shannon Watts. And at the start of 2013, my friends Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly started their organization, now Giffords, to help lead the movement prevent gun violence. The final weeks of 2012 were so hard, but my faith is buoyed by the activism that came from our tragedies. So many of us joined together to say enough. We would not let our children die in vain. And now eight years later, our movement has turned the NRA into a shell of what it once was. We’ve passed laws in states across the country, and in the last Congress, we passed the most significant gun violence prevention legislation in decades. Now as we head in 2021, our movement has elected a president in Joe Biden who will take action on gun violence. We’ve also elected Mark Kelly — growing our movement’s ranks in the halls of Congress. The progress we’ve made in such a short amount of time is astounding. In difficult times like this weekend, I remind myself that we have so much to be proud of. Yes, there is much work still to be done, but we have proven that we’re up for the fight. We have won countless victories. I know that, if we continue our fight together, justice for Jordan, Newtown, Parkland, and every family like ours is not just possible — but within sight. Onward, Lucy Change is possible, but it is not easy. Lucy will never stop fighting to prevent gun violence, but she needs our movement behind her.
