From the Desk of Don Yocham:  I just heard of an interesting new use case for Bitcoin that made me think about how Facebook got it's start. By now, everyone knows the famous story of how Mark Zuckerberg started Facebook in 2004 from his dorm room at Harvard. Lesser known is the fact that Facebook was initially closed off to anyone who didn't have a .edu email address, making it a niche curiosity to the outside world. The idea was that by limiting access, Facebook would grow in popularity more quickly among niche users (in this case, college campuses) and eventually the buzz would be so strong among the general population, that it would catch on like wildfire. Nearly 20 years later, I think it's safe to say it worked. From Niche to Mainstream While Bitcoin has done the opposite by being completely open to everyone since its inception, it's possible that niche uses cases like the following will help it prove itself and become more mainstream. New Story Charity is a non-profit working to build homes for families living in extreme poverty in Latin America. They're taking quite a radical approach by fundraising via NFTs and building the houses with 3D printing technology. But the part I want to focus on is how New Story is using Bitcoin to enable a whole new segment of the population to participate in the global economy. Since New Story's 'customers' are people living in extreme poverty, traditional banking systems are not even an option. But by thinking outside the box, they've been able to set up these families with Bitcoin-based mortgages, cutting out the traditional banking establishment completely. Families who were once "unbanked" — and had no hope of ever having a relationship with a traditional bank — are now able to pay their mortgages from a smartphone, build creditworthiness and join a global economy that they were formerly locked out of. That's an amazing feat and something that would never have been possible without Bitcoin. I'm convinced that as we increasingly see new and interesting use cases for Bitcoin, more established industries will be disrupted. More people that were formerly locked out of the economy will be able to join and contribute. And perhaps more naysayers will start to see the value of this great equalizer, taking Bitcoin from niche curiosity to mainstream currency.
