[Longevity Insider HQ logo] How the Body Fights for a Dying Liver - Part 1 Anil Bajnath, MD | January 25, 2022 | Baltimore, MD Dear Longevity Insider, The body is designed to heal itself. It alerts you when things are wrong (especially with vital organs), and it works overtime to restore your health. Your liver is one of the most crucial organs in your body. Yet, many don't understand just how many different ways our lives can be influenced by a sick liver. If you have a sick liver, you could experience: - Nausea and vomiting. - Confusion or disorientation. - Pain in your upper right abdomen. - Abdominal swelling. - Yellowing of your skin and eyeballs. - Sleepiness. While many people can identify that somthing isn't right, the very seldom assume their liver is the culprit. Your body works overtime to restore your body back to its healthy state, and it can do so with the help of ALA. Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is a sulfur containing antioxidant that is both fat and water soluble. It means you can take it with meals or on an empty stomach. It has been shown to reduce inflammation as well as oxidative stress to neurons, which may drive Alzheimer's disease progression. In addition, ALA is involved in the body's energy production cycle by converting glucose to energy. Reduced glutathione levels have also been observed after acute administration of alpha-lipoic acid ( ALA), which suggests ALA might protect against oxidative stress by increasing cellular glutathione synthesis. MOLECULAR MECHANISMS As a cofactor in at least three enzymes (meaning that these enzymes will have no function without ALA), ALA helps the body convert carbohydrates, fat, and protein into energy. This is why it can increase adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is a cell's source of energy that is made from the food we eat. Alpha-lipoic acid participates in energy metabolism and the biosynthesis of fatty acids. This means that cells can use it for energy production as well as the formation of cell membranes and other organelles. This can help the body fight off diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Mitochondrial dysfunction refers to the mitochondria's inability to produce optimum energy for the body. This leads to increased oxidative stress which can lead to disease states such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, etc. As an antioxidant, ALA is able to directly scavenge free radicals and chelate metals. Meaning it can interact with your cells and change its chemical structure to neutralize harmful molecules. As an antioxidant, ALA also quenches reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species. It also regenerates cytosolic antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and glutathione. By regenerating cytosolic antioxidants, ALA is able to help cells avoid oxidative stress. ALA is a powerful tool for many things, but especially concerning liver health.
