[Longevity Insider HQ logo] One Single Plant to Amp Your Energy Levels NOW - Pt 1 Anil Bajnath, MD | January 04, 2022 | Baltimore, MD Dear Longevity Insider, More than anything, you need your strength. You need energy. You need to not just survive 2022, but dominate it. That's why I'm highlighting one of my absolute favorite power plants, moringa. Moringa, a native plant from Africa and Asia is the sole genus of Moringaceae. In many English-speaking countries, it is more commonly known as the "Drumstick Tree" or "Horseradish Tree." Moringa oleifera is a fast-growing deciduous tree that can grow up to 10 m tall and trunk 30 to 60 cm in diameter. It has a stout and erect stem with numerous branches. Leaves are sparsely arranged along the stem and are oblong with pinnate venation. Flowers are in globular inflorescence attached to the branches near the ends. The flowers are small, greenish-white in color with four petals. Fruits are found at the base of leaves in clusters, which are club-shaped pods containing hairy seeds within. Moringa is typically found growing in the tropics and subtropics, up to an elevation of 1500 m above sea level. It naturally occurs along stream banks, on forest edges, and on roadsides. Bioactive Components of Moringa Moringa contains numerous active components such as alkaloids (N-hexane, nicotine), saponins (diosgenin, sodium moringine, potassium moringinine), amino acids and sugars, fatty oils, and more than 92 types of antioxidants. Moringa leaves and roots contain diverse polyphenolic compounds including flavonoids and alkaloids that may contribute to the health benefits associated with moringa ingestion. Polyphenolic compounds refer to organic molecules composed of multiple hydroxylated phenol rings, which are particularly abundant in natural plant products. This is important to note as polyphenolic compounds have been linked to a reduced risk of diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and neurodegenerative diseases. The vitamin C content in moringa is more than twice the amount of oranges and eight times that found in spinach. Some studies have shown moringa to contain vitamin C in levels similar to the most potent antioxidant superfruits, such as acai and camu-camu. The leaves and pods of moringa oleifera are also abundant in potassium. Potassium is a mineral that is essential for the proper functioning of all cells, tissues, and organs in the human body. Potassium helps regulate water balance, facilitates nerve transmission and muscular contraction, and assists in normalizing blood pressure. If your body does not have enough potassium, it can lead to muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, fatigue, stomach ulcers, and high blood pressure. Moringa oleifera contains more than 92 antioxidants. Antioxidants protect cells against damage from free radicals—highly reactive chemicals produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke, air pollutants, radiation, or other toxins. Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals before they do damage to your cells and may reduce the risk of certain diseases. Moringa contains many essential amino acids that are necessary for human health. Essential amino acids are the ones you need to get through your diet since your body can't produce them. Some of these amino acids also act as antioxidants or stimulants. [For these reasons, moringa has become part of my everyday routine](.
