Researchers from the University of Oxford (England) are claiming that there may not be a “safe limit” to alcohol consumption. According to their recent observational study, they argue that any amount of alcohol consumption can lead to brain damage. The scientists ran a brain scan on about 25,000 people who self-reported their alcohol consumption. According to lead author Anya Topiwala, a senior clinical researcher at Oxford, “The more people drank, the less the volume of their gray matter… Brain volume reduces with age and more severely with dementia. Smaller brain volume also predicts worse performance on memory testing.” "Whilst alcohol only made a small contribution to this (0.8%), it was a greater contribution than other 'modifiable' risk factors," Topiwala continued. She explained that modifiable risk factors are "ones you can do something about, in contrast to aging." I know what might first cross your mind: But what about wine? I thought that the flavonoids in red wine were good for you.Flavonoids are plant nutrients that act as powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. According to a recent report published in the Nature Communications journal, people who consume foods rich in flavonoids are far less likely to develop cancer and heart disease.
