Vangelis lets us into some of the secrets of telling the world about his city. What’s the one place in Athens you would recommend? Athens is a city with a rich history and culture. The Acropolis, along with all the archaeological sites and museums, are definitely a fundamental part of its character. However, in the historic commercial center with its small shops and workshops during the day, and the bars and restaurants at night, you can feel the heartbeat of the modern city. What’s the big difference traveling as a guidebook writer? A guidebook writer always approaches the places they visit with a different perspective, even when traveling for leisure. Unconsciously, they search for interesting spots and details of the place worth recommending, creating a virtual guide in their mind, even if they know they won't share it with anyone. [inside book] Was there extra pressure, writing about your home country? No one can be entirely impartial about the country they were born and raised in. When someone writes to introduce it to its visitors, they always have in the back of their mind the need for the most neutral perspective possible, setting aside their inevitable subjectivity and any positive or negative preconceptions they may have. What’s the strangest experience you had while researching? While writing about Athens over the years, I have discovered things and places that I didn't even know existed in the city, despite having spent most of my life here. There have been times when, returning home from the field, I feel like I have spent my day as a visitor in a foreign city.
