Students describe unprecedented semester Email not displaying correctly? [View the web version]( [Mount Oread Messenger]( Good morning! Today I want to highlight a story written by my colleague, Lauren Fox. This semester at KU is obviously unlike any the campus has seen, and Lauren wrote a great story this weekend about what it's been like from a student perspective. Read about how masks and plexiglass shields change how a KU acting class operates, and how students — new and experienced — are handling the numerous changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Here's one passage that really stuck out to me: "...first-year student Lilly Cleveland said that for her, “being on campus … makes all the difference.” “I’ve been loving the atmosphere,” she said. “I don’t have anything to compare it to, so it’s a new environment for me and it’s gorgeous and it’s kind of a place I’ve been able to create for myself.” Cleveland, who was studying in a tent outside the school of law, said that making friends under these conditions is difficult, but not impossible. “It’s not necessarily the masks that are the barrier,” she said. “I would more say that the lack of activities is the barrier. But so far I’ve met a good group of friends.” *** That's all for today — see you on Wednesday! Older students commented on how their experience this semester differs from previous years, and new students discussed their strategies for making friends and becoming engaged.
