(Sardonyx was added pretty much out of frustration, because people kept mistaking it for peridot, and spinel joined the August birthstone roster in 2016 as a modern alternate.) Peridot hues range from pale yellowish-green to rich green, and it is one of the few gemstones that appears in just one color. It can also have exotic origins; the stone has been found in lava rocks and in meteorites. And, of course, it makes for spectacular jewelry.
