The golden era of the cowboy was brief, spanning the 1860s to the end of the 1880s. Although their lives have been glamorized in films and books, 19th-century cowboys endured loneliness and often sacrificed family relationships as they drove cattle under merciless heat and punishing cold, all without the benefit of sunscreen or thermal clothing. The practical protective gear cowboys adopted – broad-brimmed hats, jeans, bandanas, leather chaps and boots – became an iconic, enduring look that has been embraced by many designers.
