The idea behind Earth Day was first proposed at a 1969 UNESCO conference in San Francisco. Some said such a concept would appeal only to hippies, “tree-huggers” and a few hardcore conservationists. But that proved to be wrong. In 1970 Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin and a young activist named Denis Hayes organized the first nationwide environmental “teach-in,” which they renamed Earth Day. It drew so much interest, it prompted the largest single-day protest in human history, attracting 20 million people. This year’s Earth Day theme is “Invest in Our Planet,” with one key message being to calculate your carbon footprint, then take action to reduce it by conserving, recycling and reusing, wherever possible.
