Now it’s one of the most luxuriantly green countries on Earth. It’s also one of very few places – along with New Zealand, Iceland, Greenland and Antarctica – that are entirely free of snakes. According to Irish lore, this is thanks to the venerable Apostle of Ireland, St. Patrick, who banished all serpents, causing them to slither off to sea. On March 17th of each year, the Irish – and those who are temporarily Irish – celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with lively parades, the wearing of the green, and a pint of two of green Guinness or beer.
