It coincides with the birthday of Orville Wright (1871–1948) who, together with his brother Wilbur (1867–1912), are credited with inventing, building and flying the world's first successful motor-powered airplane. They made the first flight of a powered, heavier-than-air aircraft with the Wright Flyer on Dec. 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Thanks to the courageous efforts of the Wright brothers and other aviation pioneers, this mode of transportation, once thought to be an impossibility, is now commonplace.
