Anyone can don lederhosen or a Tyrolean-style dirndl and join the fun. Oktoberfest has been an important part of Bavarian culture since 1810, when the citizens of Munich were invited to celebrate the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig I (later King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on the fields fronting the city gates. A fanatical art collector, Ludwig was also the principal patron behind many of Munich’s finest neoclassical buildings. As much as he loved collecting, Ludwig surely would have approved of this diverse Oktoberfest selection of German art, antiques and technology.
