On that date President George Washington signed the Tariff Act, which authorized the construction of 10 vessels, referred to as cutters, to enforce federal tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling. The merger of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Lifesaving Service created the modern Coast Guard in 1915, making it a branch of the armed forces of the United States. The Coast Guard has protected the United States throughout its long history and served proudly in every one of the nation's conflicts. In addition to enforcing the nation's laws at sea and guarding the nation's vast coastline and ports, the Coast Guard carries out vital life-saving missions.
