Celebrations begin on Monday and culminate on February 5, New Year’s Day, the beginning of the Year of the Pig. According to Chinese mythology, the pig was the last of the 12 zodiac signs because he overslept and arrived late. Another story says a wolf destroyed his house, so the pig had to rebuild his home before setting off. Anyone born in the Pig Year is said to be blessed with good fortune and a sociable personality. The Chinese New Year celebration traditionally includes fireworks and street festivities, and on the evening preceding Lunar New Year’s Day, many Chinese families gather for a reunion dinner. The family home is thoroughly cleaned to sweep away ill fortune and welcome incoming good luck. Windows and doors are decorated with red paper symbols of wealth, happiness and longevity; and monetary gifts are given in red paper envelopes.
